Peridot has a beautiful lime green glow, and it is one of August's three birthstones, along with spinel and sardonyx. In Hawaii, it represents the tears of Pele, the volcano goddess of fire who controls the flow of lava. A volcano brings peridot to the surface after it forms deep inside the earth. Rather than trace impurities, its signature green colour comes from the mineral itself. This is why peridot is one of the few gemstones that comes in only one colour but the shade of green varies. There are various theories on the origin of the name, with some claiming it is derived from the Arabic word faridat (gem), while others believe it is a Greek word perdiona which translates to "giving plenty". During the ancient Egyptian era, priests believed it was a tool that harnessed the power of nature, called the 'gem of the sun' by ancient Egyptians.
