To your jewellery looking its best, you should make sure that your jewellery is properly cleaned, repaired and stored. There are a few simple steps to take but sometimes things just happen, and that is where we come in.
Jewellery is precious and fragile and can be affected by many things including perfume, chemicals, heat and pollution.
Following these simple steps will help your beautiful jewellery last.
Silver tarnishes over time. This is a natural process. You can help prevent tarnishing by:
- Removing jewellery when you shower, swim, garden, do the housework and do sport.
- Not spraying perfume or applying creams directly onto your jewellery.
- Your jewellery should be the last thing you put on in the morning and the first thing you take off at night.
- Avoid wearing your jewellery in very hot temperatures.
Just by placing your jewellery in the wrong place can make your jewellery age much quicker.
- Jewellery boxes are ideal.
- Do not store your jewellery in the open, keep each item in a pouch in a jewellery box.
- This will slow down the tarnishing, but will also ensure they don’t get scratched or tangled.
A simple regular clean with a cloth is sometimes, all that it takes.
- Clean silver with a soft, lint-free cloth or a silver cloth. Silver cloths are available from most jewellers.
- We don’t recommend silver dip as this can increase the rate of tarnish over time.
- Semi-precious and precious stones can be wiped with a clean, soft, damp cloth after wearing.
- Using materials other than a soft cloth may cause scratching.

Here at Grace & Co we offer a full ring re-sizing service. We are able to offer a service for silver, 9ct, 18ct, yellow and white gold and even platinum rings.
The process starts by us checking the ring fully all over to make sure that all is well and there is no other damage to the ring or if there are stones set into the ring that the settings are all fine.
We then, what we call anneal the ring to soften the metal and to show up if there are any other joins in the shank of the ring or other solder points.
When the ring has cooled we cut the shank through and remove the correct amount of metal, if we are sizing down, or smooth each edge of the break to re-join, or cut through ready to measure the correct amount of metal we need to size up the ring.
When sizing up a ring we use a dovetail style system for the original shank and the piece added, so that we have the maximum area for soldering to give the best join that we can get.
Once the ring has been soldered and cooled down, the item is dipped in acid to remove any remaining fluxes or discolouration. The area of repair is then smoothed using files and fine emery paper ready for the polishing process.
We are able to offer a service to repair precious metal chains and bracelets.
The process starts by checking the item all over to find out if there are any other areas that may need attention.
The area that needs attention is soldered and cleaned ready for polishing.
If it is a new catch that is required, we will source the nearest match to the original that we can and replace it as necessary, and clean up ready for polishing.
If your item comes to us with a stone that has fallen out, and you have the stone, we will check to see if the stone is ok, and, if ok we will check the settings where the stone is placed to make sure that all the claws or other settings are intact. If all is well then we will reset the stone, and send to the polishing department.
If the stone has fallen and been lost or has broken we will obtain stones to match and then follow the steps above.
You may also find that sometimes the claws may break or become sharp on your settings, these can be rectified by either replacing the claw in question or smoothing the claw that is in place.
There are some items that we may request a customer’s own risk signature.
These include items with fragile stones, such as emerald and pearls, or jobs where it is best to remove stones to complete the job.
When the items arrive in our polishing department, the items are first checked to make sure all the work has been completed and the items are finished properly. They then go through a 2 stage polishing and three stage cleaning process before drying and cleaning by hand.
