Turquoise is opaque as opposed to translucent, unlike many other gems. Its blue-green colour ranges from sky blue to greenish-blue to pale green or greenish-grey. Generally, bluer stones have more copper and are considered more valuable. Some turquoise is crisscrossed with matrix, a pattern formed by the surrounding stone, which results in a loss of value.
